Social Media and Policy Development:
Mixing Oil and Water with Positive Results!
By now, most of us are participants in social media or at least are familiar with its common faces – Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, etc. Perhaps your organization has even managed to incorporate Social Media into its business strategy. But in many areas, social media, is still regarded as a renegade communication stream that does not conform to the “company line”. All indicators tell us that social media is here for the long haul. So how do we capitalize on this new communication and service concept?
This presentation will be a discussion of the key elements of creating a comprehensive “policy” designed to safety streamline and integrate these new tools and concepts into our overall business strategy. Topics will include: achieving the buy-in, demonstrating the business value, establishing a social media team and performing controlled experiments. The presentation will end with a group discussion on lessons learned and collective advice on social media development in the workplace.

** Parking at Virginia Tech: VT requires all cars to have a valid permit to park on campus. If you work for a company in the CRC, you can get a parking pass by contacting the CRC office. If you do not have a CRC parking pass, please email Patsy Galliher prior to July 16th and she will have a parking pass ready for pick up in Whittemore Hall, Room 295. If you do not display a proper parking pass, you will be ticketed.

Bill Greeves is the Director of Communications & Information Technology for the County of Roanoke, Virginia. He has been working in local level of government for over ten years. In addition to co-founding MuniGov2.0, Greeves blogs about his web 2.0 travels for Government Technology magazine.
